About the organisation

The Norwegian Support Committee for Western Sahara is a membership organisation, founded in 1993. The organisation advocates for the legitimate right to self-determination of the people of the territory of Western Sahara.

The right to self-determination should be expressed through a referendum on independence, and would be in line with opinion of the International Court of Justice and numerous resolutions from the United Nations Security Council and General Assembly.
Main activities:

  • Investigating Morocco's commercial and political partners in upholding its illegal occupation of the territory, particularly through the platform organisation Western Sahara Resource Watch.
  • Supporting human rights defenders in the occupied territories and finding ways to denounce and challenge Morocco's human rights violations in the territory under occupation.
  • Campaigning for increased humanitarian aid to the refugee camps in Algeria.
  • Raising awareness around the conflict, with more than 200 lectures annually in Norway and abroad, and through contact with non-governmental organisations, political parties, trade unions, research communities, media and governments.

The highest body of the organisation is the General Assembly. Between each Assembly, the organisation is run by a board. The organsation is a member of The Norwegian Council for Africa, The Norwegian Forum for Development and Environment and NGO forum for human rights.
