About the organisation

The Norwegian Support Committee for Western Sahara is a membership organisation, founded in 1993. The organisation advocates for the legitimate right to self-determination of the people of the territory of Western Sahara.

The right to self-determination should be expressed through a referendum on independence, and would be in line with the position of the International Court of Justice and numerous resolutions from the United Nations Security Council and General Assembly.

Main activities:

  • Investigating Morocco's commercial and political partners in upholding its illegal occupation of the territory, particularly through the platform organisation Western Sahara Resource Watch.
  • Supporting human rights defenders in the occupied territories and finding ways to denounce and challenge Morocco's human rights violations in the territory under occupation.
  • Campaigning for increased humanitarian aid to the refugee camps in Algeria.
  • Raising awareness around the conflict, with around 200 lectures annually in Norway and abroad, and through contact with non-governmental organisations, political parties, trade unions, research communities, media and governments.

The highest body of the organisation is the General Assembly. Between each Assembly, the organisation is run by a board. The organisation is a member of The Norwegian Council for Africa, The Norwegian Forum for Development and Environment and NGO forum for human rights.
