Before the week-end, the Moroccan governmental news service MAP claimed that the Danish Minister of Foreign Affairs hailed their autonomy plan for Western Sahara. "Not true", replies Minister.
The Danish Minister of Foreign Affairs has not hailed the Moroccan autonomy plan for Western Sahara under his visit to Morocco. On the contrary, the ministry underlines that he only expressed himself neutrally on the plan.
"From the Danish side, we consistenly encourage the parties to carry out negotiations and thereby find a peaceful and mutually acceptable solution to the conflict, based on the relevant Security Council resolution", said Minister Per Stig Møller.
"The last time I mentioned this to the Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs was on January 16th 2008. Denmark votes neutrally and according to the UN resolutions on Western Sahara", said Mr. Møller.
The discussion arose after the Minister held a press conference at the newly opened Danish embassy in Rabat last week. After the conference, the Moroccan news agency MAP quoted the minister of hailing the autonomy plan, something which the ministry now denies.

Dans des déclarations à la presse, le chef de la diplomatie danoise, qui s’est entretenu avec plusieurs responsables marocains, a tenu à saluer le plan d’autonomie au Sahara exprimant le souhait de voir les négociations aboutir à «une solution consensuelle» dans la cadre onusien. Trois rounds de négociations ont été tenus à Manhasset, près de New York, entre le Maroc et le POLISARIO sur le conflit du Sahara, vieux de 33 ans. Le Maroc a proposé en avril 2007 un plan d’autonomie pour sortir de l’impasse tandis que le front POLISARIO, soutenu par L’Algérie, réclame un «référendum d’autodétermination» jugé «inapplicable» par Rabat. Un quatrième round de négociations est prévu mars prochain à Manhasset, aux Etats-Unis. Les entretiens du ministre danois avec les responsables marocains ont porté également sur le renforcement de la coopération entre Rabat et Copenhague dans les différents domaines, indique-t-on dans la capitale chérifienne. Avec le Premier ministre marocain, Abbas El Fassi, le responsable danois a discuté aussi du «dialogue des cultures et des civilisations», selon la primature marocaine. Le chef de la diplomatie danoise s’est entretenu aussi avec son homologue marocain, Taib Fassi Fihri, avec qui il a abordé, entre autres, «la nouvelle politique de voisinage» de l’Europe et le processus de Barcelone. Par ailleurs, le Maroc et le Danemark ont signé un protocole d’entente pour des consultations politiques régulières. Le protocole prévoit la tenue de « consultations régulières pour la consolidation de la coopération entre les deux pays et l’échange des points de vues sur les sujets d’intérêt commun », indique le ministère marocain des affaires étrangères.
